How do you use coins to purchase volcanos and wild cards? The game says you can, but I haven’t figured out how and I’ve had to part with much real money.

You can’t use game coin for volcanos or wild cards - only real money. I recommend working hard on the daily and club quests where these are the rewards.
Use the treasure shrine to get wild cards.
